I have a confession to make.
I might be an energetic, kale-loving nutrition coach today, but I sure didn’t start out this way. Oh no, I had to learn about nutrition the good, old-fashioned hard way!
In the beginning…
Like most people I learned very little about nutrition or self-care while growing up, other than to avoid fat at all costs, having come of age during the fat-phobic 1980’s.
Up until my late 30’s, I ate a fairly typical American diet of processed convenience foods, with a piece of fruit or a salad thrown in once or twice a day. A typical “type A,” I worked long hours in my corporate finance job, often neglecting my sleep and exercise routines and leaving little time for any social life or fun.
Having my son at age 34 during the midst of a major economic recession did nothing to help my stress, sleep or social life! Although I was one of the lucky ones who did not get laid off, the stress of being a new working mom in the middle of a major corporate downsizing took its toll.
By my late 30’s I was suffering from chronic heartburn, indigestion, insomnia, a weak immune system and rosacea, an inflammatory skin condition characterized by redness and acne on the cheeks, nose and chin. And boy was I exhausted!
Still, I never considered that my diet or lifestyle had anything to do with any of these conditions.
Knock, knock Amy! This is your wake up call…
I finally got a wake-up call when I was still suffering from a sore throat six months after supposedly recovering from a mild case of the flu. Rather than have the endoscopy my doctor suggested (I still shudder at the thought!), a friend suggested I see an acupuncturist.
Much to my amazement, my sore throat finally disappeared after a few weeks of treatment! At this point I was ready to do just about anything my acupuncturist suggested, so when he gave me some nutrition tips, I followed them like a model patient.
Always the research junkie, I headed to a local book store for books on nutrition and holistic healing. Feeling I had nothing to lose, I decided to experiment.
Out with the old, in with the new…
I eliminated virtually all processed foods and replaced them with lots of organic vegetables, whole grains, legumes, fish and herbal teas.
I make this sound easy, but let’s get real.
I mourned ice cream, cookies, Diet Coke, lattes, wheat and the ease of buying takeout dinners once or twice a week. I grumbled to my family and friends about the stomach aches and heartburn I felt even after eating a meal full of whole grains and veggies!
However, a few months later, just as I was ready to throw in the towel and go back to my old eating habits, something shifted.
The AMAZING results!
My digestion finally settled down, I lost 15 pounds, began to sleep more soundly and, most amazingly, my skin completely cleared of any signs of rosacea, much to my dermatologist’s surprise and delight.
I felt more energetic and vibrant than I had in many years. Needless to say, I became a passionate believer in the power of nutrition!
That was 2006 and since then I have continued to learn more about nutrition (having gone back to school for two years to study it!) and experiment with different foods and diets. Nutrition can be downright confusing and controversial, with dueling scientific studies completely contradicting each other.
It doesn’t have to be that hard!
I teach my clients to choose the foods that work right for their unique body. I help them listen to what their gut is telling them – literally and figuratively! I help them create new habits that feel effortless and energizing.
